Disalvatore even discusses the importance of a fire command center and the lessons learned from the fire at the MGM Grand Hotel in 1980. Casino Betting Investigation has ten chapters and is organized into a preface and appendices, with review questions. It is an engrossing read, but it is not for everyone.
Analysis of real-time gambling behavior of a large cohort of participants
The Bwin gambling dataset includes two years’ worth of data on the Internet betting behavior of over 4,000 individuals. Each participant was profiled by age, gender, and other demographic characteristics. The dataset also includes daily aggregates of betting activity records, including the total number of bets made, total monies wagered, and winnings credited to individual bettors’ accounts. The study was approved by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Institutional Review Board.
The findings suggest that higher gambling levels are associated with a higher risk of dropping out. While the sampling process may have biased towards nongamblers, the results indicate that gambling is associated with decreased overall gambling frequency, decreased online gambling expenditure, and an increased level of risk. Interestingly, there is no relationship between the gambling frequency and other categories of distress. Further research is needed to better understand the factors associated with problematic gambling.
Findings from an investigation of Legends Sports
The FBI and DOJ have filed criminal charges against 34 individuals and corporations related to an illegal online gambling operation. The defendants, including several Legends executives, acted as bookmakers, agents, runners, and shell companies. These defendants funneled more than $1 billion in illicit bets from American gamblers to Panama. The investigation also implicates 23 companies, including payment processors, in the Legends gambling conspiracy.
The defendants in the Legends sports case include Bartica Alan King aka Cool and Luke. King, who lived in Costa Rica, operated the illegal sports gambling website. King, who has since moved the company to Panama, changed the name to Legends Sports to target U.S. bettors. He is currently facing 20 years in prison for conspiracy to commit money laundering, ten years for racketeering, and five years for operating an illegal gambling business. The indictment also calls for forfeiture judgments of at least $1 billion that will be traceable to real estate, Sabreliner aircraft, gas lease, and vehicles owned by King.
